I bought a bathroom spray the other day, because I needed it, and because the bottle looked cool and natural in the shop.

I like a pleasant smell in my bathroom (read: toilet), but I prefer a natural odor from a synthetic. The room spray I’d bought had an artificial smell, so that got me motivated to make my own.

Turns out, making air freshener is not only easy; it’s also cheap, and you can create the scent YOU like the best.

How To Make Air Freshener Using Essential Oils

The oil and water issue.

The key to making essential oil sprays is to pick the right ingredients to bind to the essential oils because oil and water don’t mix.

Creating a homemade essential oil room spray without something to blend and emulsify the oil to the water will give you a watery mess with little smell.

And that is because all your essential oil will sit at the top of the water and the only thing spraying will be water.

The solution is simple; it’s using a natural emulsifier to bind with the water and the essential oils, so they become one beautiful blend.

My go-to natural emulsifiers are:

  • Witch Hazel

  • Alcohol such as Vodka

  • Salt – Epsom salt, Himalayan Salt, or Sea Salt

These emulsifiers also act as preservatives.

I prefer salt for my room sprays. The reason I like salt is it’s inexpensive. Plus, it doesn’t add an extra scent to the already incredible smelling essential oil blends I have created.

I make my basic room spray recipe for 2 oz / 60 ml glass spray bottles for essential oils. You can get larger bottles of 4 oz and double this basic recipe to fit the glass spray bottles for essential oils you choose.

Steps To Make Room Spray:

  1. Start by adding 1 tsp of salt in the spray bottle - using a small funnel makes this step easier.

  2. Add your 15-20 drops of essential oils.

  3. Stir bottle to mix essential oil and salt.

  4. Fill rest of bottle with water. I like to fill to just below where the bottle begins to curve up to the neck. That way, there is plenty of room for the sprayer parts.

  5. Add sprayer top and shake well.

  6. Dry bottle and label your spray.

  7. Shake well before each use.

  8. You can use your new room spray immediately, but give it a day or two for everything to blend well together and make the scent stronger.

Note: Make sure the salt is completely dissolved before your first use; otherwise, it can block the little pipe.

Tip: Always add your water last. That way, the oils will mix better with the water. Plus, nothing is more frustrating than adding everything and then finding you put too much water in, and now you have wasted oils.
